A new study by the Motion Picture Association of America has found that a wide array of films have already surpassed the $1 billion mark, but the big winners have been the ones that take advantage of the growing popularity of mobile phones.
The study, which analyzed box office data for all movies released in the first six months of this year, found that $1.2 billion has been earned worldwide since January 1.
That is nearly the total of $1,938 million the studio earned in 2016.
The top three titles, however, are the three big hits of the summer, Jurassic World and Deadpool, which were released in July.
The new study also noted that the films have made an average of $634,907 in the U.S. since their release.
The biggest winners were the five that made their domestic bows, which includes The Big Short and The Bigger Picture.
The movie studios are making money on the same old formula, which has proven successful for them in the past, according to Jeff Bock, an analyst at comScore.
The big difference is that now the studios can spend the same amount on marketing and advertising, Bock said.
That gives the movies more staying power in the marketplace.
“They can make more of an impact on moviegoers than they could in 2016,” Bock told CNNMoney.
“But we’ll see how they do in 2017 and beyond.”
One of the biggest winners of all was the sequel to The Big Lebowski, which opened in March and earned $1 million in its first six days.
The film is set for a $1-billion domestic opening, according a report from New Line Cinema.
The sequel is also expected to be the biggest opening of the year for a film directed by Josh Boone, who is best known for his feature films including the 2013 crime drama Get Out and the 2013 horror film The Mummy.
The biggest loser of all in the study was the comedy Trainwreck, which earned just $100,000 on its first day of release in the United States.
The movie is set to make $2.5 million in the same period, according comScore, which also predicts a $20 million domestic debut for the film.
The studio said in a statement that the film “has been an incredible success for us,” and that Trainwreck will be available for streaming starting in March.
